Bag-In-Box Wines
Seeing how has bag-in-box and other non-bottle packaging as its theme this month it is a great coincidence that F has an article on exactly the same subject. An email highlighted the piece just as I was penning some thoughts on .
My past experience of bag-in-box wines is generally negative. Poor quality wine thrown into an air-proof bag - useful only for parties thrown by the unknowledgeable. (Moi, a wine snob?)
OK, they may be convenient for those who are throwing a party (they generally work out cheaper than equivalent bottles) or useful for those who only want a quick slurp and feel opening a full bottle would be a waste - but for me it always boils down to quality. Or at least the impression of quality. Bag-in-Box just doesn’t do it for me.
I am willing to test these prejudices by participating in WBW. The Fine cooking article make sit sound like things have moved on recently with quality wine now available in various styles of packaging. Two wines impressed the writer -
“Particularly impressive was the DTour Macon-Villages Chardonnay, from well-known sommelier Daniel Johnnes, with its stylish packaging and focused green-apple, citrus, and mineral flavors. Also, the Black Box offerings were excellent, especially the lush, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon.”
Sadly neither of these, I believe, are available in the UK so I shall have to hunt out alternatives.
