Recommended Viognier - notes from around the blogosphere

Viognier grapeA selection of wine tasting notes from some of my favourite blogs -

To kick off - an audiocast from Tim at Winecast. The show is from late 2005 but still holds plenty of interest…. Beau at Basic Juice recommends a ‘value Viognier‘ the Renwood’s “Select Series” 2004 at just $10 certainly worth a try if you have not sampled a Viognier before.

From Australia Cam has tasted plenty of wines at recent shows. Two Shiraz-Viognier blends from Torbreck sound superb, and worthy of cellaring while those from Yering Station (Yarra Valley) more for immediate drinking - the Marsanne Rousanne Viognier (M.V.R) blend in particular worth seeking out.

I haven’t seen the Yalumba Botrytis Viognier 2004 that Wineorama recommend; but as I have such a sweet tooth this must be one to search out. But Lincoln seems a little disappointed “Unfortunately, the nose promises what the palate cannot deliver – it does lack concentration and I’m left with a somewhat unsatisfied feeling.” More promising though is the Gulf Station Shiraz Viognier 2005. A good 90 points for “a lovely Shiraz, showing some cool climate restraint, some dried herbs and not a peppercorn or dried apricot in sight. Top stuff.”

I have sampled plenty of Viognier based wines over the years - most recently the Domaine Virginie La Grange Viognier, 2003, Vin de Pays, France which I rather enjoyed and the Yalumba Virgilius Viognier which was stunning.
