Great Grape Day II - Viognier

Viognier grapeWelcome to Wine Sediments’ second Great Grape Day. This month we are taking a glass or two of Viognier to our lips.

The intention is not to provide comprehensive coverage of all things Viognier but rather for the team to provide interesting snippets on a unified theme. As with our last Great Grape Day, which covered Cabernet, you wont find details of planted acreage in Chile or the differences of American verses Croatian oak on Italian Viognier - rather a collection of interesting posts.

We have selected perhaps the worlds most trendy white variety for Great Grape Day II; Viognier. The team hopes you enjoy the posts. As always feedback is welcome.

Just wanted to thank you guys for calling attention to a great grape! I had no idea it was so trendy but I’ll get over it. I also noticed you didn’t actually mention how to pronounce it. I just posted a little something over on elbloggotorcido.com that should help - cheers! - j

Hi,

Viognier thrives here in Virginia also. When there was a reported 312 acres of it planted in the world, Horton Vineyards 1st planted this once rare white wine grape of Condrieu in 1989. Since that time many local wineries have followed suite, and I would have to guess that at least 70% of the 100 wineries here produce Viognier. The nominal price for a local bottle is about $17. Other great examples at attractive prices can be found in Australia, Chile, South Africa, Washington State and California.

Viognier is probably the most popular white here in VA and Cabernet Franc the most popular red.

Many thanks to the CA Rhone Rangers for helping this grape reemerge in that area again. Condrieu is the height of fashion for Viognier; more complex, rich, full, Yummy!

Great Grape to select!

Try some VA Viognier out if you have a chance.
