Le Beaujolais Nouveau: The French Press Reacts

Beaujolais NouveauIt will be “very fruity and full…with tastes of raspberry and currant,”  the news magazine Le Nouvel Observateur tells us here in France. The “promising”  2006 new wine is a success, according to journalist Carole Bianchi – although the title of the article refers to the “persistent economic crisis”  facing French wines.

Le Monde, in an article simply entitled “Le beaujolais nouveau arrive,”  takes a more negative tack from the beginning, reminding the reader of the 2004 George DuBoeuf blending scandal, and that “as usual, there are the good ones…and the others.”  Journalist Jean-Claude Ribault specifically recommends the new wines from the Domaine de Vissoux, available in Paris for about seven euros.

For the most positive spin, check out the website of French TV channel TF1. Their article reports that the 2006 version is “very good quality…combining fullness, aromas and fruit.”  Whether or not you read French, the photo of festive Japanese wine-drinkers trying out the very first bottles — they’re in the right time zone for it — will make you want to join in the party.
