Cabernet Sauvignon Blends

To Blend or not to Blend?

The answer, in the case of many of the worlds greatest Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, is to blend.

There is a myth swirling in the miasma that surrounds the wine industry that seems to get picked up by wine drinkers now and then that a blend is a lesser quality wine. This is absolutely untrue, and in fact many of the worlds greatest wines are Cabernet Sauvignon blends.

The most celebrated Cabernet blends are probably those from Bordeaux, which feature Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The 2005 Bordeaux futures are currently available, should you find yourself eager to shell out a thousand bucks or so for what is supposedly one of the greatest vintages in the last fifty years.

Regions outside of Bordeaux are making a mark with excellent Cabernet blends as well. A few to try:

Penfold’s Koonunga Hill, Shiraz Cabernet 2003

2005 Black Opal Shiraz Cabernet

2002 Beaulieu Dulcet

Justin Winery & Vineyards 2001 Paso Robles Isosceles

Warwick Estate 2001 Estate Reserve Trilogy

2003 Franciscan Oakville Estate Magnificat Napa Valley

Happy Tasting!
