Fresh Magazines Wine Selections

Fresh Magazine Nov 2006
Fresh magazine is one of the top UK food publications. Their wine content is rather good and this month recommends 15 wines

Whites:
Honeywood Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (5.99 Tesco) A few bottles of this has passed through the Barrow household recently (I think it was on offer) for a tasting note see Spittoon.

Brown Brothers Chenin Blanc 2005 (4.99-5.49 supermarkets) fizzing with sherbet flavours Not a great fan myself but recommended with a Salmon Mousse by Fresh.

Graham Beck Sauvignon Blanc 2004 A good South African producer, but not one I have sampled recently..

Reds:
Tierra del Fuego
(5.75) from Argentina gorgeously full-bodied

Truilli Zinfandel 2003 (Sainsburys 5) note the use of Zinfandel rather than Primitivo on the label (a marketing thang rather than a criticism of the wine)

Mad Fish Shiraz (independents 8.99) Just a few days ago I enjoyed the premium range of wines from the same stable (the upper range goes under the Howard Park label), eating a range of fine foods while chatting to the wine maker. The Mad Fish Bay wines may be the producers bread-and-butter range but by golly they are good! Fresh recommends this with Beef Wellington.

Ros/Sparkling:
Three Choirs Classic Cuvee
(7.99 three-choirs-vineyards.co.uk thirtyfifty.co.uk) A more attractive price than many English sparkling wines this hails from Gloucestershire.

Gratien and Meyer Cuve Cardinal Rouge
(8.47) not seen this anywhere but Fresh describes this as the perfect sparkling choice for winter.

Kumala Zenith Ros (Morrions, Summerfield 7.99) an extension to the ubiquitous South African brand.

Organic/Fairtrade
Traidicraft South African Cabernet Merlot
(65 case traidcraftshop.co.uk) full-bodied, clovey, comples fruitiness, restrained tannins, smooth dry finish recommended with, interestingly, a soup Broccali and Stilton Soup.

Morrisons Spanish Shiraz 2004 (Organic) (4.99 Morrisons) they dont really sell this to me with a surprisingly thin blackberry flavour with strong smoky overtones

Touchstone Sauvignon Blanc (5.99 vintageroots) vintage roots is one mighty fine specialist in organic/fair-trade wines

Dessert Wines
Tesco Finest Sauternes
(Tesco 11.99) the flavour doesnt disappoint Mango Cheesecake anyone?
Lejay-Lagoute Violette Parfait Amour (thedrinkshop.com 10.69) not a wine but add a drop or two to a sparkling wine
Chateau Filhot Sauternes 1999 (Majestic 9.99) Must be a half bottle for this price but its a good producer.
